The pictures were submitted by John Hanna.
He said "Here are some photos of AF 0644 at some place called Tonly Chan RVN. I went with a crew to salvage parts from it to keep the rest of them running..."
"We went in there in a C-123. I was told that C-130's
couldn't land there with the tail sticking up at the end of the runway.
I was there to get all the radios, any other radio related parts that were useful,
and some things that the radar and instrument shops requested. There was no body
else from electronics...
In the bottom left photo you can see a bulldozer moving earth under the wing so the
AR boys could get to the wing flaps.
Each night, we went back to Saigon when the C-123 came back to get us. I'm not sure
if we went were there two or three times.
The Army wasn't too friendly and stayed up on the hilltop . I don't know how
somebody got the bulldozer out of them but that definitely didn't happen on day one.
There was gunfire in the distance but nobody was shooting at us.. "
Sam McGowan says "C-130B 61-2644 from the 463rd TAW was lost at Tonle Cham on 28-11-68. I think I remember hearing that it was a landing accident. Tonle Cham had a reputation that dated back to 1967 when it was first opened and several airplanes were damaged there in accidents. An E-model was lost at Tonle Cham a few weeks later in January when it was left on the ground due to maintenance problems and was destroyed by NVA artillery."
